Brownieâs Tree Farm was just off Blue Star Highway. There was a huge lot of about ten acres, all with Christmas trees for sale. Families could come in and chop one down themselves or they could grab one that was pre-cut. Rachel and her mom always opted for a precut tree only because they didnât have the strength to chop one down themselves.
Even though it was just after eight in the morning, the lot was about half-full, surprising Rachel. She expected people would have been more prepared since Christmas was only a few days away, but maybe she was wrong.
âDo you want a tree first or the hot chocolate?â Rachel asked. It was so cold, her breath came out white, and she was grateful Logan had extra clothes for her to bundle up in since there was no way she would survive in her slip of a nightgown, even if she wore her snow boots and heavy jacket over it.
âWe should probably get the hot chocolate,â Logan mumbled, shoving his hands in the pockets of his jeans. âWouldnât want you to get cranky. I know you donât drink coffee, so this might be our only chance at a substitute.â
âHa ha,â she returned dryly.
Rachel led Logan past the entrance. There was a red and white banner hanging on a chain link fence. Christmas tree lights were strung up on top, giving the lot a festive glimmer. Her heart skipped a beat at the sight. She loved everything Christmas, and being in a place that just reminded her the holiday was only a few days away caused her entire body to thrum with excitement.
There was a small line at the hot chocolate stand and the two settled in. Rachel saw an older couple holding hands in front of her and a small smile touched her face. She didnât consider herself overly romantic but she liked the thought of possibly growing old with someone someday. Even better if they had a kid or two. Rachel was an only child and didnât want too many kids. She wanted enough she could give her attention to without having to spread herself thin.
âDid you ever want kids?â she asked as they moved forward in line.
âWhat?â Loganâs tone was flat with a level of surprise to it.
She supposed she couldnât blame him. The question was pretty random. And serious. And intimate. And definitely none of her business.
âDid you ever think about having kids?â she repeated.
âWhat kind of question is that?â he barked.
Instead of getting offended, Rachel rolled her eyes again. She didnât even bother to answer that question since they had already gotten to the front of the line.
âHi,â she said brightly. âCan I please get two hot chocolates with the works?â
âThe works?â Logan asked under his breath.
Before Logan could pull out his wallet, Rachel slid the person behind the booth a five dollar bill. He called her order over his shoulder and Rachel led Logan away so the people behind them could order. When their drinks were ready, they would be placed on the end of the booth, so they hung close by.
